MICHIKAWA Shozo (ceramist)

MICHIKAWA Shozo (道川 省三) was a latecomer to the world of ceramics and did not come from a traditional background. However, this allowed him to be free of existing rules and boundaries that often hold back ideas from outside-the-box artists in Japan. Having developed his own techniques and individual style, during an interview for “Craftland Japan” (Thames & Hubson) he is quoted as saying, “Don’t listen to teachers.” His dynamic, powerful, and unique creations appeal to an international audience, which in turn has helped him to be better accepted in Japan.

MICHIKAWA’s home studio is located in Seto, Aichi Prefecture, one of the country’s main centres of ceramic art. However, he found another home in Sasama, a small nostalgic spot hidden deep in the mountains of Shizuoka Prefecture, a place to which he frequently returns after workshops and exhibition trips to Europe and the US.

Sasama’s population, which has dwindled to only 500 people, mostly produces tea leaves and shiitake mushrooms. MICHIKAWA has taken a major role in ‘reactivating’ the village by organising the bi-annual “SASAMA International Ceramic Art Festival,” welcoming artists from over 50 countries to exchange technical knowledge and present and sell their creations.
