MORITA Rieko (Japanese-style painter)

秋華 (four-panel folding screen, 2000)

MORITA Rieko (森田りえ子) has won numerous awards and held countless solo exhibitions in Japan and overseas. While many of her works are kept in several of Kyoto’s famous temples and shrines, such as Kinkaku-ji (Golden Temple), Jonan-gu, Todai-ji Ema, most are with private collectors. She is independent, which means she is not associated with any artist association, and is an affiliate professor at Kyoto City University of Arts.

MORITA mostly paints with natural pigments used in traditional Japanese painting. The delicate and sensitive touch of her pictures is appreciated and praised by a wide range of admirers. While her trademark Chrysanthemum Kudamono (Spider) Kiku flowers seem to float in their own beauty, her daintily depicted insects seem poised to jump and chirp. With her classical Geisha and Maiko standing in contrast to her modern Kawaii-Gal fashion painting, MORITA reflects on the changes in Japanese culture. Her ceiling painting in a famous Japanese restaurant is just one of her many recent activities. MORITA’s official profile, which includes a comprehensive list of her activities, can be seen here:

Her most recent solo exhibition (in 2022) at the Takashimaya department store group completely sold out of all the works displayed. Understandably, there is a long waiting list for her upcoming works, which are sold only through a few exclusive galleries in Kyoto and Tokyo. However, if you click the “inquiry” and contact us, we will directly connect you, free of charge or commission from our side.

At HIKITA-YA, we are honoured to feature MORITA Rieko on our new website and hope to organise a future exhibition tour in Europe. Please let us know if you are interested in cooperating or exhibiting.
