NAKAMURA Takuo (ceramist)
Born in 1945, as one of three sons of a renowned ceramic artist family in Kanazawa, it took NAKAMURA Takuo (中村 卓夫) some time to follow in his father’s footsteps. Only after discovering his own creative ideas did he enter the professional ceramic artist world.
At one point he decided that rather than doing so by hand, he would use wire to cut blocks of clay to create unique (mostly) tableware pieces. The resulting distinct style of his works quickly brought him fame, but this did not stop him progressing. His next step was to create “Vessel not a Vessel (器になることをやめたうつわ),” which propelled him onto the international stage.
The 2022 Teahouse project at the Humboldt Forum Museum Berlin, which was designed and installed by a team of Ishikawa-Prefecture artist friends, led NAKAMURA onto yet another new adventure. His recent tea ceremony ceramic settings consist of multiple elements that the user can arrange themselves, inviting them to participate in the creative process and engage in a virtual conversation with the artist. The end user is no longer a passive observer, as is the case in many art forms.
When we met him at his home studio in Kanazawa, his eyes shone with excitement at having discovered yet another dimension for his creative mind. The Berlin project inspired him to create objects that not only communicate with the user, but also with the surrounding space in which they are placed. The interaction and dialogue between KOGEI and architecture will create new avenues for both art forms.
This is the next step and challenge in his seemingly never-ending quest, and we are eager to see and experience it.
