SUDO Reiko (須藤 玲子) is not simply a textile designer; she is a textile innovator. Her extensive knowledge of traditional weaving techniques, combined with her drive to create new textiles as an art form, make her Japan’s most influential and internationally renowned textile authority. SUDO is the owner and design director of NUNO Corporation in Tokyo, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2023.

SUDO’s works are represented in the permanent collections of many institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (Ishikawa Prefecture).

In 2022, her exhibitions included:
KYOTO nuno nuno: Horikawa New Culture Building
FANFARE: Tsuruoka Art Forum, Yamagata Prefecture
MAKING NUNO: Textile museum St. Gallen, Switzerland
Absolute Blue: BUAISOU Works with Japanese Natural Indigo (co-curated by CHAT: Center for Heritage, Arts and Textiles, Hong Kong)

If possible, please visit her shop in Tokyo (Roppongi, Axis bldg. B1.). The photo above shows one of NUNO’s representative textiles available as a shawl. We will introduce this beautiful product in an upcoming newsletter, so please subscribe.

If you wish to explore traditional or new weaving technologies, or textile designs, we will gladly put you in direct contact with SUDO. Just click the inquiry and email us. (Free of charge or commission from our side.)

Exhibition tour projects in Europe about the many aspects of Japanese textiles could also be commissioned. Please let us know if you are interested in exhibiting or organising such a project. They are always well attended and meet with great public interest.

We at HIKITA-YA are honoured to feature SUDO Reiko on our new website.
