SASAI Fumie (lacquer artist)

Starfish 1

SASAI Fumie (笹井 史恵) is highly admired both in Japan and internationally for her innovative and unique style of Urushi (Japanese lacquerware). She is also an associate professor at Kyoto City University of Arts, where she teaches Urushi art applied to new ideas and materials.

Highly regarded all over the world, Urushi Craftwork has a rich history Traditionally, Urushi lacquer was applied mostly to wooden tableware, decorative boxes, and religious objects. Many different traditional styles have evolved since the Jomon era (12,000 – 300BC). However, with the arrival of plastics and dishwashing machines, the use of Urushi has diminished considerably in the average Japanese home.

Modern artists like SASAI Fumie have created a completely new Urushi art form. Rather than being applied exclusively to wood, it is applied to textiles and other modern materials, bringing fresh and creative freedom to the traditional craft. Urushi has become the main material of Sasai’s works, which are mostly decorative art pieces in unique shapes and forms.
