SOMENOTSUKASA YOSHIOKA (textile)

work of Somenotsukasa Yoshioka

The all-natural textile dyeing studio Somenotsukasa Yoshioka (染司よしおか) is now run by YOSHIOKA Sarasa (吉岡 更紗) who recently took over from her father, YOSHIOKA Sachio (5th generation). With a history of over 200 years, samples of Somenotsukasa Yoshioka’s colourful creations are shown frequently in museum and gallery exhibitions. However, they feature most notably in the Victoria and Albert Museum’s permanent collection.

While YOSHIOKA Sarasa still works hands on in the workshop, she mostly keeps herself busy by lecturing about the history of traditional Japanese dyeing with natural ingredients. Although the work undertaken by Somenotsukasa Yoshioka is diverse, they have contributed to traditional events at temples and shrines such as Todai-ji Temple and Yakushi-ji Temple (Nara Prefecture) for generations. More recently, Yoshioka’s exquisite and precious textile installations decorate airports and hotel lobbies.

The waiting list for their kimono textile orders is long, and their Noren entrance curtains (暖簾) are also in high demand. Their wonderful sundry products are sold in the Yoshioka gallery shop in Kyoto and at museums and selected department stores.
